Efren Peñaflorida: e"FREN" to kids

Another Filipino was awarded and recognized globally as CNN concludes their search for outstanding Heroes for 2009.  He’s none other than our very own Efren Peñaflorida.  At the very young age of 16, he formed Dynamic Teen Company along with his friends and peers.  A public teacher by profession, they committed to teach children, young and teens by roving around the roads of Cavite with nothing but a push cart with books and other learning materials – more popularly known as “Kariton Klassroom”.

I’m sure a lot of his students are happy with what he has achieved.  He has been their mentor, “Kuya” and friend all the same time.  This man has a really fine and good heart. I also commend other nominees from different nations who vied for the  most coveted CNN Hero 2009 title.  All of them are deserving to be called a Hero.  Efren deserves the recognition and all Filipinos are definitely proud of him.  This will serve as a lifetime treasure to all those he has inspired and moved.

As his acceptance speech says:

“Our planet is filled with heroes, young and old, rich and poor, man, woman of different colors, shapes and sizes. We are one great tapestry. Each person has a hidden hero within, you just have to look inside you and search it in your heart, and be the hero to the next one in need.”

“So to each and every person inside in this theater and for those who are watching at home, the hero in you is waiting to be unleashed. Serve, serve well, serve others above yourself and be happy to serve. As I always tell to my co-volunteers … you are the change that you dream as I am the change that I dream and collectively we are the change that this world needs to be.”

Hats off to you, Efren. True enough that if we want change, be one.
